Utah College Application Week (UCAW) is right around the corner and we hope you’re ready! Applying for college can seem overwhelming or you may not know where to start. That’s where we can help.

Throughout November, all Utah high school seniors in partner high schools will be able to apply to college during the school day. To see if your school is holding a UCAW event, check out the StepUp events calendar or talk to your counselor. During a school’s UCAW event, college-readiness experts and resources will help you step-by-step through the application process and are here to answer all your questions.

But before your school’s UCAW event, there are a few things you can do to prepare:

1. Think about your future career.

What are your interests and talents? What subjects did you like best in school? Knowing the answers to these questions can go a long way in helping you decide on a college major or program. If you need help getting started, UtahFutures has interest and career assessments that help you figure out potential career choices that align with your natural talents.

2. Decide which colleges you want to apply to.

Once you have an idea of what you want to study, see which colleges offer that major or program. Remember, “college” can be anything from a one-year certificate, to a two-year associate degree, to a four-year bachelor’s degree and beyond.

Use the StepUp Utah College Directory to explore the different colleges and universities available in Utah. Schools in Utah offer a variety of clubs, volunteer opportunities, lectures, on-campus employment, fitness facilities, concerts, plays, and more! Each school will have slightly different activities and resources, so do your research and decide what kind of college best suits you.

3. Know the college application deadlines.

The StepUp Facts at Glance page is an easy way to keep those deadlines in mind and see when you need to apply. However, sometimes deadlines can change, so for the most up-to-date information, be sure to check directly with the college you’re applying to.

4. Gather the information you’ll need.

Before you sit down to fill out your application, be sure you have:

  • Personal information: full legal name, birth date, address, phone number, e-mail
  • Birth place: city, county, state, country
  • Contact information of parent/guardian: name, address, phone number, e-mail
  • Driver’s license or state ID card
  • Social Security Number

* If you are not a U.S. citizen and do not have a SSN you are still eligible to apply and attend any college/university in the state of Utah. Talk to your school counselor for more information.

5. Don’t forget to apply for financial aid.

UCAW event is also a great time to fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Remember, the FAFSA is the only way to receive federal financial aid for college. The FAFSA determines your eligibility for federal financial aid (grants, work-study, and student loans) as well as aid from the state and the college you choose to go to. So if you don’t submit your FAFSA, you might be missing out on money for college.

Your school may even be hosting a FAFSA Completion event to help you fill out and submit your FAFSA. Check the StepUp calendar to see what FAFSA events are offered in your area.
