Parent Question: I/we have never searched for scholarships. My boy is a Senior this year… Please tell me the best way to begin the search! Visit certain websites weekly?  Then he also plans to serve a 2 year mission for our church, so even if we find, apply, and win some scholarships for him, then what do we do, defer them?

Thanks,  Overwhelmed mom of a Sr boy!

Hi and thanks for your questions! I can totally understand why you would feel overwhelmed, but we’re here to help.

We get this question very frequently, so we actually wrote a blog with tips about searching for scholarships. I have also attached our scholarship toolkit with tips to help students become viable scholarship candidates.

In terms of deferment, many state and institutional scholarships can be deferred. Some private scholarships can be deferred as well, but that will be a case-by case basis; he’ll need to reach out to the providers of any private scholarships he received to discuss deferment options.

As a parting thought, it’s also important that your senior fills out the 2019-2020 FAFSA (available October 1, 2018) even if he goes on a mission – many institutional and state scholarships require it as part of their application process.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Kindly, Katie
