The StepUp to Higher Education Team welcomes you back to another great school year. The start of school is an exciting time because it is full of lots of possibilities. You have the opportunity to make this year great and we want to help you take advantage of some StepUp resources that will help you succeed as you prepare for college.

#ScholarshipWednesday: Weekly Scholarship Alerts

Did you know that you can start applying for college scholarships right now? Many students think they need to wait until their senior year or until they have been accepted to college, but that is not the case. There are scholarships out there for students as young as second grade.

One of the questions I am often asked by students is “Do you have any scholarships that I can apply for?” The best advice I can give is… There are many scholarships out there, but you have to put in the work and effort to get that money. When I was in high school I thought that if I was a good student and did some extracurricular activities people would want to give me money to pay for college, and I would magically get a scholarship. The truth is, people do want to give you money, but how will they find you unless you apply for those scholarships? They won’t.

Each Wednesday on our StepUp social media we will be posting about different scholarships. Take 30 minutes once a week to sit down and apply for that or another scholarship. If you get in the habit of searching out and applying for scholarships regularly it will be that much easier for you.

Do you know what you should be doing each year to prepare for college? If your answer is no, you are not alone! That’s why we created our grade-by-grade checklists: a simplified list of items that you can be checking off your list in each grade to help you know how you can stay on track for college. We’ve made it even easier for you to complete those items with our weekly #ChecklistChallenge. Each week on our social media we’ll select and share one task from the lists along with other tips and advice to help you accomplish each week’s challenge. Follow along and we may even have some prizes that you could win if you complete the tasks.

If you complete at least 20 items from the grade-by-grade checklists, you could qualify to receive the StepUp Utah Scholars medallion to wear at your high school graduation and have the opportunity to show that you have gone above and beyond in your preparation for college.

Text Messaging

We are excited to announce that we have started a new text messaging program. Students in grades 8-12 can sign up to receive StepUp texts about upcoming college fairs, financial aid events (where you can learn about paying for college and apply for financial aid), scholarships, and other tips on how to stay on track for college. Be on the lookout for more information about where you can sign up for these helpful texts.

You can always reach out to the StepUp team with any questions that you have about preparing for college. We help thousands of students become college-ready each year. And we were once in your shoes; all of us here at StepUp know that college prep can seem overwhelming at times. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, keep in mind that there are people out there (like us!) who are willing to help and rooting for you to succeed.
