Transitioning to college is a totally daunting experience. You are facing a major change that will affect every day for the rest of your life. No pressure, right? Wrong! This is a big deal, and no one is going to try and tell you otherwise. That’s why we at Utah Valley University are working our hardest to give you as much information as we can, along with the best tips for success. The best piece of info I can give you right now is this: we have a place for you. Whether you see yourself as a doctor, a teacher, or an automotive technician, you can thrive at UVU. And by thriving, I mean that you will have access to the greatest resources, be connected to an amazing network of professors, counselors, and students, and, most importantly, you will be given opportunities that will start you on a path of life-long success.
So, what exactly can you expect here? In all honesty, more than I can really tell you, but here are a few main reasons that UVU should be at the top of your list.
Real talk: the main reason we go to college is to get a job. We don’t just take classes for kicks, we want them to mean something. That’s why we focus so heavily on engaged learning. Even in your general ed. classes we have you working on projects to solidify the things you are learning, with the majority of these projects being resume-worthy. As you get further into your degree we will connect you to countless internships and career opportunities. Our greatest hope is that you’ll leave here with a degree to support you, and a resume that will make you the best candidate for any position.
Wide Variety of Programs.
Most people think of college as a place with insane amounts or reading and writing, countless group projects, and an eternity in the library. While some of this is true, there is no “one-size-fits-all” at UVU. With over 200 options of what to study, it’s likely that you’ll find a program that fits your learning style, personality, and personal interests. Whether you want a two-to-three semester certificate or a master’s degree, we have you covered.
Small Class Sizes.
For the past three years UVU has held its place as the largest university in the state of Utah, with over 37,000 students this year. If you’re like me, you probably feel like you are going to be in classes with up to 500 people. This is not the case! We have an average class size of 23 students. We do this to ensure that you have great access to your professors, as well as connections to your fellow classmates.
At UVU we celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive campus environment. As I mentioned earlier: we have a place for you here. Culture, ethnicity, race, religion, gender preference, and economic background will not stop you from having a fantastic student experience. We recognize that each of us has a life unique to us, and we should be appreciated for that. Staff members will work to connect you with other students similar to you, as well as countless resources to help you succeed.
So, we aren’t going to beat around the bush here: if you don’t have a good time at college, you aren’t doing it right. Whether you are an early bird and start classes at 7AM, or a night owl that hangs out in the library until midnight, there is something you can be involved in. Participate in a variety of leadership programs, join one of our 160+ clubs, play on an intramural sports team, or simply find a great group of friends to get you through the day. At UVU we strive to provide a fun and up-beat environment with a variety of ways to be entertained. Catch our movies series, stop by one of the many campus events occurring daily, go to a dance or a concert, listen to professionals in our speaker series… and don’t forget the countless options to chow down on FREE food.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. UVU has so much to offer to anyone that steps through its doors. But you don’t have to take it from me… Come and see for yourself. I said it once, and I’ll say it again: we have a place for you—and that’s a promise!
