Black History Month was first observed in 1976 and is designed to recognize the importance of African American history, culture, and contributions to our society.

StepUp is excited to celebrate Black History throughout this month and the entire year because, when we embrace diversity, we learn new ideas and perspectives, develop positive relationships, and express compassion and understanding toward all people. In order to promote diversity in education and the workforce, many colleges and private organizations offer scholarships specifically for minority students – here are just a few of those scholarship opportunities you can check out:

Pastor France A. Davis Scholarship

Due: March 15, 2018
Eligibility: This scholarship is available to Utah residents of African descent who will enroll in a Utah college or university.

American Correctional Association Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship

Due: June 1, 2018
Eligibility: Minority students who plan to pursue a degree related to a career in criminal justice are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship

Due: March 1, 2018
Eligibility: This scholarship is available to high school seniors of African descent who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or information systems, or select business programs.

Due: April 26, 2018
Eligibility: This scholarship is open to minority students who plan to pursue degrees leading to careers in computer and video game arts.
