Bryan: “You’re listening to Title IV + More”, StepUp Utah’s podcast for counselors and educators.”

Katie: “Welcome, listeners. I am Katie Wornek and I am a Paying for College Expert with StepUp Utah.”

Jacob: “And I’m Jacob Newman. I’m also a Paying for College Expert with StepUp Utah.”

Bryan: “And I’m Bryan. I’m the Marketing Coordinator for StepUp Utah specifically with our digital media, like the website and our social media.”

Jacob: “So we’re excited to welcome you to our Title IV + More, the StepUp Utah counselor and educator podcast. So, just to explain a little bit about what StepUp is for those of you who are not familiar, StepUp Utah…we’re here to help Utah families and Utah students 8th through 12th grade in preparing and paying for college. So we provide a lot of resources, and we do outreach to help Utah students and families know how to prepare and pay for college.”

Katie: “Yea, and our goal for the podcast is to give counselors the most up-to-date information about those topics specifically. So the reason we chose the name Title IV + More is Title IV, as many of you know, is the law that gives the government permission to give students federal financial aid. And so this is our big focus is the paying for college piece, but we will also cover other topics like community events, relevant education news, we’ll have special guests on. The podcast will be released once every two weeks, so we don’t want to inundate you with too much information, but we also want to keep you as up-to-date as possible. And, at the end of each month, we’ll have a segment that recognizes a counselor or counseling team in Utah. Uh, we’re currently getting nominations in for those from the Utah State Board of Education, but we welcome any input if you want to send us information about somebody that you think deserves recognition, we would definitely welcome that feedback, and you can contact us by email or phone. We’ll go over that contact information at the end of the podcast.”

Bryan: “And each month on the podcast we’re going to summarize some of the StepUp resources we have specifically the events, publications, and other resources we have for each month. For the month of, or the upcoming month of September, we have several events. We have our FAFSA Boot Camps, which are our FAFSA trainings for counselors and educators and access groups. We have an online version of that if uh Katie and Jacob want to mention a little bit about that and how you can sign up if you’re interested.”

Jacob: “So we have two sessions that we’re going to be running. We’ll have one that will start on Monday, August 28 I believe is the date and it’s not too late to sign up for that one. You, uh, you can sign up through reaching out to us. We also have one that’s going to be starting in September, and it’s going to run September 4th through the 22nd. So if you’d like to sign up for those you can go ahead and give us an email at outreach@utahsbr (and in State Board of Regents) .edu, and we’ll be able to get back to you. We also have one Boot Camp that is going to be taking place at the WSU campus in Davis County and that’s going to be on the 26th. We also have one on the 27th in Ogden as well, so if you’d like to sign up for those you can feel free to reach out to us. I think that’s right.”

Bryan: “And then of course we also have our FAFSA Completion Open Houses coming up in October. That’s uh the time of year where we travel all throughout the state, mostly Katie and Jacob, and we help students and parents at your schools complete and submit their FAFSA. We have quite a few of those already scheduled around the state. You can find all of those at StepUpUtah.com/events. And then, of course, we’re also available for booth and tabling events upon request. All you have to do is go to StepUpUtah.com/requests and you can request that we, uh, be present at your event there.”

Jacob: “So, in terms of other resources that StepUp Utah offers, we have our online resources, so we have StepUpUtah.com, which has a lot of our print publications, we have PDF versions of them, we also have a blog where we post great information about preparing and paying for college. We’re really active on social media, so feel free to follow us on Twitter, Instagram. Our handles are @StepUpJacob and @StepUpKatie and you can also follow @StepUpUtah. In addition to these online resources and social media, we provide motivational materials like posters and bookmarks and other things that you can give out to your students to create a college-going culture in your school. Um, so if you ever have any questions about any of these materials, feel free to reach out to us. We’re really nice, we don’t bite, right? Um, so we’re here to help. Just let us know how we can help you use these resources in the best way possible.”

Katie: “Thanks, Jacob. Uh, so next episode, we are going to be introducing our FAFSA Tip of the Week segment, so we’ll be talking about uh some recommendations that we have for getting students to fill out the FAFSA. We’re going to cover some relevant education news and events for the month of September, and we’ll have a special interview with Erika Norton, who is the program manager for Utah Scholars. They’re undergoing some changes for the new school year and she’ll give us the details about that. As I mentioned earlier, we do encourage feedback, questions, comments, or any nomination you have to recognize a counselor or a counseling team. You can reach us at outreach@utahsbr.edu. You can call me at 801-321-7245. Jacob, what’s your number that they can call you at?”

Jacob: “It’s 801-366-8487, and we look forward to hearing from you.”

Katie: “Yea, excellent. Thanks, guys.”

Bryan: “This has been the StepUp Utah Title IV + More podcast. Special thanks to Bensound for the royalty-free music. See you next time.”
